Letting Go of Perfection for Progress

Being a perfectionist can be a great thing, but not if it works against you.

I’ve seen people thrive off of perfectionism and others who have been completely defeated by it.

Personally, I’m not too much of a perfectionist but I can be pretty particular about doing things a certain way. And when I don’t do something perfectly according to my standards, I tend to get stuck on making it “perfect” instead of concentrating on progress.

It can easily stop you in your tracks and become a road block in your rhythm of getting something done. I often get stuck trying to perfectly fold all my clothes and organize them into specific categories that I lose track of how many times I’ve done it over and over again just to make it “perfect.”

And the ironic part is… it will never be perfect!

So in reality it seems like I’m trying for nothing and all that I’ve lost is time. It may be difficult to accept that things won’t go as you planned and won’t work out the way you expect them to… but that’s life. It would be a shame to let perfectionism distract you from achieving progress.

In my case, I can easily let go of the fact that my clothes will never be perfectly folded, all the time, in the most organized fashion.

And that’s OK.

I accept it, move on, and continue to do my best in organizing the rest of my clothes. At the end of the day, it’s more important that I actually make progress in cleaning up and keeping things tidy.

After all, we’d never be able to get many things done if we always tried to do everything perfectly.
