Seeing The Best In The Worst

It’s easy to be scared when you’re constantly being bombarded with news on how the next big storm is going to be the “worst this place has ever seen.”

Hurricane Ian is here today. It’s my first time living in a state that experiences hurricanes, and I’m excited for it.

There’s an experience to be extracted from every situation and I’m fully ready to take on that experience.

Being prepared has always been a priority, but often we don’t get any practice living through tough times when we live in comfort.

Having all the supplies and tools to get through a power outage is great, but it’s not until you actually put those things to use that you get the full experience.

Now that Hurricane Ian is here, associated threats are likely to strike. We have tornado warnings, flood watches, power outages, and many other issues to face while the storm passes through.

Many of these warnings are things to worry about and in the past I used to be more afraid of going through something like a hurricane, but now I see it as an opportune time to use my supplies and experience how to get through a potentially disastrous event.

The importance of preparedness really shows in times of possible disasters.

Learning to be resourceful has been a big part of being prepared for me. Many times we throw away items that can be reused and repurposed, such as plastic containers used for yogurt, milk, and even dish washing liquid.

There are also many things to think about when it comes to preparedness. My mind goes through many “what if” situations and I try my best to prepare for as many different scenarios as I can. In the event of a power outage, we’d lose access to water because the water pump runs on electricity.

In preparation for that, I reuse all plastic containers and water bottles to fill up with water.
